Remote Key Fob Repair

Modern vehicles are equipped with remote controls that can be used to lock, unlock and start the vehicle. However, like any piece of modern technology it isn't without issues.

Usually these are very simple to fix. You can reset it by following the directions in your owner’s manual.

Check the Battery

The battery of the fob that powers it is responsible for the remote control function. It's a tiny and affordable part that needs to be replaced on a regular basis to ensure the fob's functioning. But, aside from the battery, there could be other reasons your fob isn't working. Damage to the physical, exposure to water or internal component failure could be the reason. If your key fob's battery has stopped working, replace the battery.

Be sure to have the right size battery. The majority of modern key fobs are powered by a three-volt CR2032, which is easily available in a wide range of stores. The majority of these batteries are engraved with the size on one of the edges of the fob. A quick search for the name of your vehicle's brand will help you identify the exact type of battery you need.

Open your key fob carefully and remove the existing battery. Take a picture of the inside of the fob before you do so to ensure you put everything back together correctly. This simple step can save you from having to purchase an entirely new fob if you make an error when putting it back together.

Certain key fobs also come with a mechanical backup key known as an emergency blade. Check the Connections

Occasionally your key fob may just stop working - even though it's still programmed to your vehicle. This could be due to many reasons, including broken battery terminal buttons or contacts. You could be able to fix the problem yourself by performing basic maintenance.

The first thing to do is ensure that your backup remote is able to lock and unlock your car's doors. If it can't then there could be an issue with your primary remote. If you aren't able to, it's time to try replacing the battery in your backup remote.

Before you replace the battery, it's recommended to take apart your key fob and perform an inspection of the circuit board. Check for cracks in the solder joints. When you're done, you can replace the battery and rebuild the key fob.

Once you've replaced the battery and reassembled the key fob, it's now time to test out its connection with your vehicle. Use a flathead screwdriver into the notch at the bottom of the key fob. From there, you can break the two pieces of your key fob, and gently remove the circuit board. Insert a new CR2032 3V battery with the negative end facing down. Once you have inserted the board and reassembled your key fob.

If this does not resolve the problem, you may have a more serious problem. In this case, you will need to call your dealer or an independent service shop that is specialized in the specific model of your car. They can diagnose the issue using a radio-frequency tester, a device which determines whether your key fob sends signals to the car's computer.
