How to Replace an audi a3 spare key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging because there are two connector pins and they perform different functions but the most effective way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading about 1000 ohms. Examine key for audi signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors are not firing at all. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and the 4th was dry. I placed a tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one stays closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get zero Ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows a temperature of -49c. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, but i think i've pretty much ruled out everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is easy to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of fuel injectors, etc. In order to do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you encounter a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could lead to an engine shutdown.

A failing G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, or an unfire when in the gear. If you have any of these issues it is likely your sensor is failing and requires replacement audi key cost. The good news is that they are very affordable and readily available particularly when you're looking at a Bosch sensor, like ours. 5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the reason behind many issues with your vehicle. It's an essential component of the audi tt key fob not working's transmission because it communicates to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is turning. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other car components to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It transmits a signal via a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then uses and processes this signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost and then sends it on to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those points. This is a common feature across the audi keyless entry 80-100-200-RS2 model, ranging beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 Du You may also find them in wrecking yards.
