The robots also come with the feature of Carpet Boost which boosts its power when it detects dirt on the carpet.

The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored excellently in our tests of floors with no carpet, and they are particularly adept in cleaning hair from dogs. However, they have several flaws that prevent them from being our top choice. One of the Q5's shortcomings is its navigation system does not feature AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It's also prone to getting stuck on socks and shoes and could not navigate densely packed rooms very efficiently during our tests. It also doesn't have a camera to see around corners.

It's still a good deal for those whose home or office has lots of unfinished floors and you want to save some money. It's also very quiet and you can use it when you're at work or at school. The only thing it lacks that you don't get in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on bare floors. It's also less effective in mopping, relying on disposable wet wipes that don't hold on for long and don't take on dried-on debris. The Q5 has a self-emptying dock, though. And, if you have to, you can swap the mopping pad to dry ones in just a few seconds.

2. IRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive vacuuming and mopping capabilities into a compact, sleek package. Its agile navigation and intelligent cleaning maps make it quick to clean and effective at dealing with larger particles such as pet hair. It also features a self-emptying dustbin, powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the most efficient robot hoover for carpets, although it isn't as efficient as some of its competitors in deep cleaning.

This highly efficient mop and vacuum combination uses advanced sensor technology to avoid obstacles and pet waste and it learns the layout of your home over time to ensure more efficient cleaning. The app allows you to set up zones and modify the cleaning schedule. Its battery life is average when compared to similar models.

You can instruct the X30 Ultra to remove its mops and extend them when in a carpeted area, which helps prevent cross-contamination. The flex arm is ideal for getting under low-lying furniture and along baseboards. It's not as effective on the washboard as our other Editors' Choice Picks, the Ecovacs Ozmo N8Pro+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.

In the course of testing, X30 Ultra was the most efficient robot vacuum/mop which could clean an entire home, with 66 per cent of its battery remaining. It also did a great job cleaning a range of floors and rooms with mixed flooring types, including certain area rugs. Its obstacle detection was top-notch, and it nimbly avoided fake dog socks, turds, shoes and cables.

It's a little more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but offers superior suction and an onboard bin that automatically empties into the base. It also supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It is able to clean floors even after it has vacuumed. This is a feature that we haven't seen in other robot vacuum that vacuums and mops vacuum/mop combination.

3. iRobot Roomba X40

With an elegant circular design that appears more like a regular Roomba rather than the compact models this robot vacuum and mop combo is one of the most attractive designs in our evaluations. The latest flagship model from iRobot is also among its most advanced. It has advanced features, like Enhanced Dirt Detection as well as future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads on its own).

It's also the sole robot vacuum/mop to score the perfect 10/10 out of 10 in our testing. This is thanks to the combination of high-tech sensors, including a structured lighting system, a camera, and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that is fully autonomously refill and empty its base station, and boasts an its own self-cleaning mop pads.

Like other iRobot models like the X40 is user-friendly, with an easy mobile app interface and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant. The only drawback is that the X40 is still a loud unit. This can be a problem in mornings before work, or during the night when you're trying to fall asleep.

It's also somewhat expensive, though it's not as pricey as the Ecovacs Omni or Roborock's S8 MaxV Ultra Both of which are equally capable and more attractive. This is a two-in-one vacuum that's very capable however, it will cost you more and produce more noise.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with many advanced features that will let you get rid of your chores. Similar to Ecovacs range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that takes care of both vacuuming and mopping, with a multi-function dock that automatically empty the vacuum's dust bin, fills its water tank, washes and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot makes use of LIDAR and structured lighting to map out floor plans and spot obstacles. It is more efficient in its navigation than its competitors with premium features. It also has a front mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards but this wasn't 100% reliable in our tests and was sometimes confused with power cords or obstructions.

Its vacuum has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to get the job done. It also features "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the vacuum works and also adjusts the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the house according to how dirty they tend to be.

For larger houses it's worth looking for one with zone or spot cleaning modes that let you tell the robot to clean one particular area of your home by using the app or via voice commands. If you have furniture, a stairway mode is also a good option. Finally a recharge and resume feature that lets your robot vacuum pick up right where it left off is great for busy families.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is more intelligent than its price would suggest. It does a stellar job vacuuming, removing 55% of the debris that was found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses with one pad that has a reciprocating motion that does a better job cleaning than the other robot mop cleaners we've tested. It's also self-sufficient with a fully-featured application, and a self emptying base that is washable.

The well-designed iRobot application guides you through a mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you mark on the map. It can be used to make cleaning schedules, arrange a spot clean or to prioritise your dirtiest rooms to ensure better performance. The app has a range of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom mapping and advanced cleaning settings.

It is also able to reach corners and under furniture more easily because its shape is more rectangular. It also has a powerful 8000 Pascal suction and combs that are intelligent for pet hair. And you can set up a spot clean that thoroughly cleans a particular area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a sleeker and more affordable alternative to the iRobot Roomba. It has a more attractive, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras appear like cute eyes. It is excellent at vacuuming, but it's more likely to get caught in low thresholds. It is also louder than other top robot vacuums that we have tested. It also has a less user-friendly app and a tiny base station that doesn't double as an emptying bin.
